Reliable Recall on and off Leash, Against All Odds

To teach a reliable recall, start with the dog on a leash, 5-6' will do. Use its food, not treats, so if feeding 2 times a day, take one meal and pocket it. Start without distractions, in the family room is a good place to start or a room with some space. While she is facing away from you, call her and use a little leash pressure to guide her back to you, say a cue word, I use yes,( or a clicker) and reward her. Repeat about 400 times, she will get it. No, seriously do this till her food is gone, do it daily. If she leans to stay by your side in anticipation of being called, move around the room. Allow her to wander from your side. If she stays by your side, take a few steps back to create that separation, call and reward.

OUTSIDE. Keep her on a long leash 15' or so, a lunge line for horses or a rope will do. And repeat the same way as you did without the distraction. With distractions, your dog may take longer.

It works, I have 2 young pups in training right now that are working dogs. Reliable recall is a MUST. At 18 weeks, they are 90% on off leash recall. Rabbits poops are hard to beat!
